The Area Development Districts are contracted with the Kentucky Department of Transportation Safety for a full-time Transportation Safety Coordinator. The KY Department of Transportation Safety is made up of three (3) main divisions: the Division of Highway Safety Programs (which includes the 15 Area Development Districts); the Division of Highway Safety Administration; and the Division of Transportation Security.
Some of the activities for Transportation Safety include Coordination, Promotion, and Participation in the State Departments programs and events such as car seat checkup events, statewide conferences, Road Safety Audits, and the Safety Circuit Rider Program; Safety materials are distributed at local/regional events and activities; and Educational Programs can be coordinated for schools or other civic group meetings.
Some of the Educational Programs available through the state department include:
- Drive Smart KY Bear and/or Vince & Larry crash dummies - mainly used at fairs or in conjunction with other programs
- Drive Smart Rollover Crash Simulator - depicts the effects of rollover crashes and non safety belt usage
- Child Passenger Safety - car seat checkup events, etc.
- What's Holding You Back, Kentucky? - promotion to encourage safety belt use
- Ghost Out - popular with high schools - the "Grim Reaper" removes selected students from class representing a victim of an alcohol/drug related crash - the students write their obituary and a funeral is held at the end of the day.
- Mock Crash - a staged event showing all aspects of a crash - includes police, EMS, etc.
- Judgement Day - a "mock" trial for an underage DUI offender
Safety Belt surveys have been conducted in all nine (9) of the Pennyrile Counties. Surveys at the high schools as well as selected areas in each county have been completed and percentages have been sent to the state and are awaiting public release.
The PADD Transportation Safety Coordinator is Melody Goodwin and can be reached at (270) 886-9484 or melody.goodwin@ky.gov.
