Reapportionment in PADD Counties

As required by Kentucky Revised Statutes, counties are required to re-evaluate the populations within their Magisterial Districts after the decennial Census. Using a GIS computer program developed by the Bluegrass ADD, PADD’s GIS staff has worked with the Commissioners of most Pennyrile counties to evaluate the 2010 population in their Districts and suggest re-alignment of district boundaries as needed to ensure they meet the KRS requirement: “ . . .compact, contiguous, and the population of each district shall be as nearly equal as is reasonably possible.”

This process is an excellent example of how the use of current GIS technology can greatly speed accurate decision making in our region. Of all counties assisted, the longest any Commission took for a recommended solution was two hours, the shortest time was only twenty minutes!
