Job and Skills Training in Western Kentucky

Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Services

Services are available through the West Kentucky Career Center System to assist low-income Adults and Dislocated Workers in obtaining or retaining employment.

Core Services are available to all interested individuals. These services may include:

  • Orientation and information on training and employment needs
  • Local employment statistics, including vacancies and skill requirements
  • Program eligibility applications
  • Resource room access for resumes, internet job searches, etc.

Intensive Services are available to individuals determined eligible for services and may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment and testing
  • Development of an individual employment plan
  • Counseling and career planning
  • Short-term prevocational services
  • Out-of-area job search or relocation assistance
  • Internships or work experience activities
  • Literacy activities related to basic workforce readiness
  • Intensive case management and follow-up services

Training Services are available to individuals determined to be in need of training. These services are only provided for occupations that are considered to be in demand by employers in the Purchase and Pennyrile counties. Training services may include:

  • Occupational skills training
  • On-the-Job training (OJT)
  • Workplace training and cooperative education programs
  • Private sector training programs
  • Skill upgrading and retraining
  • Entrepreneurial training
  • Job readiness training
  • Adult education and literacy activities in combination with training
  • Customized training


Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Services

Training services are also available to eligible individuals affected by a Trade-impacted layoff or closure and consist of the same type of training services listed under the Workforce Investment Act Services section. Eligibility and need-to-train criteria must be met prior to enrollment into any training service.

Youth Services

Local youth programs funded through the West Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (WKWIB): (1) provide an objective assessment of each eligible youth participant; (2) develop an individual service strategy for each eligible youth; and (3) provide preparation for postsecondary educational opportunities, linkages between academic and occupational learning, preparation for employment, and helps provide connections to intermediary organizations that provide strong links to the job market and employers.

Services made available to eligible youth (as defined in the Workforce Investment Act Regulations, is a low income individual, age 14 through 21, who possesses a barrier to employment,) through Workforce Investment programs or referrals to other agencies include:

  • Tutoring
  • Alternative secondary school
  • Summer employment opportunities directly linked to academic & occupational learning and career interests
  • Paid & unpaid work experiences, Job shadowing
  • Occupational skill training
  • Leadership Development opportunities
  • Supportive services
  • Adult mentoring
  • Follow-up services for up to one year
  • Guidance and counseling

There are several assessment and program activities you will be involved in, focusing on four areas: (1) Educational Achievement, (2) Work Experience / Work Readiness Activities, (3) Developing as a Citizen and Leader and (4) Additional Support. WIA Youth Programs are available in several counties throughout the Purchase and Pennyrile areas, serving 16-21 year old youth.
